Smart Dustbin
The Challenge
Waste management remains a persistent challenge in rapidly urbanizing regions. Traditional systems fail to segregate waste efficiently, leading to environmental pollution, inefficient recycling, and health hazards. Overflowing bins and unsegregated garbage contribute to mosquito breeding, air contamination, and ecosystem damage.
Develop an affordable, sensor-based smart dustbin that automates waste segregation at the source.
The Vision
The Smart Dustbin project aimed to build an intelligent, low-cost system to classify waste into wet, dry, and metal categories using commonly available sensors and microcontrollers. This project supports India's broader mission toward smart cities and sustainable environmental practices by reducing manual labor and improving segregation accuracy.
System Architecture
The Smart Dustbin integrates sensors and actuators for seamless waste classification:
Automated Waste Segregation
Moisture Sensor identifies wet waste like food or organic material
Metal Detector Coil + Electromagnet isolates metal components
Air Blower separates light dry waste (paper, plastic) via airflow
Waste is sorted onto a conveyor belt and directed to the appropriate bin
Environmental Monitoring
DHT11 Sensor measures temperature and humidity
MQ-135 Gas Sensor detects harmful gases (ammonia, CO₂, smoke)
Bluetooth Module (HC-05) communicates with the Blynk mobile app for remote monitoring
Arduino Uno handles sensor inputs and actuator control logic
System Logic
Metal waste is detected first and pulled aside using an electromagnet
Dry waste is identified using airflow after metal is removed
Wet waste is detected by moisture sensing and dropped into a separate bin
Data such as temperature, humidity, and gas levels are pushed to the Blynk app in real time
If toxic levels or temperature thresholds are exceeded, alerts are triggered on the mobile dashboard
Software & Code Features
Arduino code enables continuous monitoring of gas and metal frequency via sensors
Threshold values for toxic gases and metal presence can be set and updated via the Blynk app
EEPROM memory stores custom calibration offsets for more accurate detection
Dual monitoring using serial print and Bluetooth ensures robust operation during testing
